Presented as a fragment of executable code, the text simultaneously evokes two ways in which humanity has understood tides throughout history: as a physical phenomenon governed by the gravitational relationship between the sun, the moon, and the earth, and as a philosophical question posed to the cosmo through poetic language. The installation retrieves real-time tidal data from a monitoring station in Venice, where water level is measured by floating sensor and uploaded online every five minutes. An AI system uses these measurements to adjust the pulsing rhythm of the neon word *rise*. Unlike human perception, which is sustained continuous through visual feedback, the tides become invisible to the machine during the five minute gaps of data updates. During these intervals, the system must rely on previous observations and mathematical prediction to construct a speculative model of the water's unseen movement until the next measurement arrives. By foregrounding the temporal gaps within data acquisition, the work examines how machine perception and cognition are formed through discontinuous encounters with reality. Borrowing the syntax of computer programming, the neon text reads if(vacancy){open;}, a statement that grants access under the condition of spatial availability.The intervention emerged in response to the institution’s decision to shut down overnight studio access due to budget constraints, reducing resources once promised to its students. Displayed after the building’s official closing hours and publicly visible to the main street of downtown Chicago, the intervention transformed a studio window into a public screen with message. The Sheep of Rrmea is a multimedia installation inspired by Qiang ritual traditions and historical cosmology. Combining light, language, animation, and a sheep skin drum, the work traces the continual transformation of cultural memory across materials, generations, and technologies. At the center of the installation is an original poem imagining a sheep consuming sacred texts before its skin is transformed into a ritual drum. The spoken poem is translated into waves of light, visualizing sound as a living archive that moves between voice, body, and image. Each transformation gives the story a new form while carrying traces of those that came before. The work reflects on how cultural memory continues to take shape through acts of transmission, transformation, and reinterpretation. Oral traditions evolve into written language, ritual gestures resonate through digital media, and ancestral knowledge continues to unfold through contemporary artistic practice.
